And so it begins…

Hello blogworld!

Allow me to introduce myself:

My name is Anna and I love to take pictures!

Here’s my story:

Back in middle school, I started out by playing around with my mom’s film SLR. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing but I had a blast snapping away and the pictures actually turned out pretty decent. Some of them even placed in a few amateur competitions!

In 2006 I purchased my first DSLR camera – a Canon Rebel – right before heading off to Rome, Italy, for a semester abroad. I carried that camera with me all over Western Europe, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and most of the East Coast of the United States. It saw me through my last semester at Penn State, my very first big-girl job in Arlington, VA, and six different addresses here in Hampton Roads, VA, including purchasing my first house!

Needless to say, after all that, it was time for an upgrade. In February 2012, as soon as I received my tax return, I purchased a brand new Canon 60D. After a year with this camera body, I’m just as in love with it as I was the day I took it out of the box!

Throughout this time, I’ve dreamed of starting my own business and taking my photography to a professional level. However, something always seemed to be holding me back. I had too much on my plate in college. I was working too many hours. I don’t know anyone in this new city. Maybe after grad school. You know what? I hate excuses and that’s exactly what all these “reasons” are.

Just before Christmas I attended a Q&A hosted by Amanda Hedgepeth of Amanda Hedgepeth Photography. This woman is such an inspiration!! Not only is she an ammmmazingly talented and awesome photographer (she just happens to be shooting our wedding in April!) but she is also passionate about helping and encouraging aspiring newbies, like myself, who are just starting out in this industry. A lot of valuable information and helpful hints were passed around during the session but here’s what struck me personally and lit a motivational fire inside of me:

As I listened to the ladies in attendence tell their stories, a common theme seemed to develop. Many of them had some sort of back ground in graphic design and nearly all of them had bought/received their cameras in the last year or two.

Stop the presses! Year or two?!?! I’ve been shooting with a DSLR for nearly seven years!!! And these ladies had the gumption to start their businesses after only a year or two?!?!?! What the heck has been holding me back??????????

Those dang excuses.

Well, ladies and gentlemen. No more. No more excuses. Its time to turn this hobby, this dream, into a reality. If it doesn’t work out, it won’t be because I didn’t try.

2013 is the year Portraits by Anna becomes more than a dream.
